It has 40 pay lines, and players must find matching combinations to win this Ancient Egypt-themed video slot from Casino Technology. Released in mid 2014, Cat Queen is a 5-reel video game from the emerging gaming platform. Cat Queen provides royalty and paupers alike with plenty of bang for their buck. It also features wild and scatter symbols, free spins, and a double-or-nothing gamble feature.

Even though Cat Queen doesn't have a progressive jackpot to aim for, I've seen worse pay-tables. With pharaohs, pyramids, crosses, scarabs, and cat-people on the table, you should be able to win frequently in a game whose medium variance makes it likely to pay out frequently.

Before playing any game, it's highly recommended that you review the rules and pay-table. You can hit matching combinations in all kinds of crazy configurations here due to the 40 paylines. However, it's best to squint at the pay-table so you can learn the patterns of each payline.

Basically, the game is as simple as it sounds – land three or more matching symbols on any active payline starting from the leftmost reel. There's a real ornate feel to the game, since each symbol appears to have been polished to a fine sheen in a workshop. The action, incidentally, takes place on a busy 5x4 reel grid covered in gold. Graphics on this game are superior to many other Egypt-themed games we've reviewed so far, like WMS' Egyptian Riches. The queen's crown and pyramid, as well as Eye of Horus icons, are finely detailed.

The music, on the other hand, is a step up from the generic audio of so many slot games - we're not claiming it's a Grammy winner, but it's at least vaguely atmospheric.

If you wish to activate a maximum of 40 paylines, you can do so by using the + and - symbols below the grid. The maximum, of course, gives you the best chance of winning. In addition to the Bet Max, Autoplay and Turbo modes, Cat Queen is available in a wide variety of coin sizes, ranging from 0.01 to 50 per spin. You can play the game as quickly as you like or as slowly as you like with Bet Max, Autoplay and Turbo Mode configurations.

Symbols of the Egyptians

In accordance with the game's theme, many symbols are used, including the wild Cat Queen, which can stand in for other symbols to complete a winning combination. In this case, however, the starlet cannot replace the scatter, which is the pyramid. Three or more pyramids trigger 15 free games, during which further free spins can be earned. Pyramids are also connected to pay-table figures. When you get three, four, or five scatter symbols anywhere on the reels, you'll receive instant credits worth 5x, 10x, and 50x your bet.

As a side note, the wild multiplies 1,000x when five of a kind appear in a line, 500x when four appear, and 200x when three appear.

The Eye of Horus and golden cross pay 100x for five and 20x for four as symbols in the game presumably uncovered from the queen's tomb. Blue scarabs and golden eagles pay 100x but only 15x for four, while handsome male pharaohs – the Cat Queen's other half? – pay 200x and 50x respectively.

Are you willing to take a risk?

The Double Up gamble feature comes into play after each and every winning spin. It involves guessing a higher card than the dealer's. You can win double your money or lose it all. Refreshingly, however, you don't have to wager your whole bank roll; you can stake just 50%. Be sure to implement this feature sensibly; you're not forced to press that flashing light every time! Queen of the Reels?

Joining the likes of Book of Ra 6 and other Egypt themed casino slots, Cat Queen is an admirable addition to the ever-growing pantheon of Egypt themed casino slots. Not only is the game visually stunning, but the gameplay is also excellent. There are 14 coin denominations in the game, so it attracts both high-rollers and low-rollers. The special features could certainly be improved, but I have no hesitation in recommending this game to all.
